Semi-Final Game 5 of the 2017 WVSSAC Boys Basketball State Tournament featured the #1 Fairmont Senior Polar Bears and the #5 Mingo Central Miners. Fairmont Senior entered the game with a 23-3 record, picking up their Quarter Final win against Herbert Hoover. Mingo Central entered with a record of 20-6 with their Quarter Final win coming against Phillip Barbour.
Fairmont Senior started trailing the miners early, being down 17-11 at the end of the 1st quarter. Fairmont Senior would go on to outscore their opponent 17-4 in the 2nd quarter, shooting a combined 83% from the field. The Polar Bears would enter the locker room with a halftime lead of 28-21. Things would not change during the 2nd half, as the Polar Bears would continue their hot shooting into the 3rd and 4th quarter. They finished the game shooting 47% from the field, and an even 50% from 3 point land. The Polar Bears received an outstanding performance by Tavon Horton, Zyon Dobbs, and Jalen Bridges; who finished with 13, 13, and 11 points respectively. Dante Stills finished the game with a team high 12 rebounds in the winning effort.
Mingo Central started the game off continuing their hot-streak from their quarterfinal game against Phillip Barbour. The hot-streak would cool off in the 2nd quarter, and the miners entered halftime trailing 28-21. Despite a valiant effort, the Polar Bears continued to extend their lead through the 3rd and 4th quarter. The Miners received an excellent performance by junior Jeremy Dillon and senior Aaron Banks, who finished with 18 and 11 points respectively.
Fairmont Senior moves on to the 2017 Class AA State Championship Game to face Chapmanville Regional High School on Saturday March 18th at noon. Mingo Central finishes their season with an final record of 20-7.
