Quarter-Final Game 5 of the 2017 WVSSAC Boys Basketball State Tournament featured the #1 Capital Cougars and the #8 Parkersburg South Patriots. Capital entered the game with a 21-4 record, picking up their Regional Championship win against Greenbrier East. Parkersburg South entered with a record of 14-11 with their Regional Championship win coming against Hurricane.
Capital stepped on the gas early, going on a 12-0 run to start the ballgame out strong. They were able to keep the pressure up throughout the entire game and didn’t allow the patriots to come within single digits for the rest of the game. The cougars received an outstanding performance by Anthony Pittman, who finished with a team high 26 points, capped off by 3 monster slam-dunks throughout the game. He also snagged 10 rebounds to give himself a double-double. The cougars finished the game shooting 56% from the field, forcing 15 turnovers, and were able to outscore the patriots in every quarter.
Parkersburg South started the game off rather slow, but found their stroke by the end of the 1st quarter. The patriots hung on to the cougars throughout the ballgame, but were never able to dig themselves out of the hole they got themselves into at the beginning of the ballgame. The patriots received an excellent performance by Shane Snider who finished with a double-double, scoring 27 and snagging 11 rebounds.
Capital moves on to the Semi-Finals to face the winner of (4) Morgantown vs. (5) George Washington on March 17th at 5:30 PM. Parkersburg South finishes their season their season with a final record of 14-12.
