Quarter-Final Game 8 of the 2017 WVSSAC Girls Basketball State Tournament featured the #4 Morgantown Mohigans and the #5 George Washington Patriots. Morgantown entered the game with a 19-6 record, picking up their Regional Championship against the Wheeling Park. George Washington also entered with a record of 19-6, their Regional Championship win came against Woodrow Wilson.
Morgantown started the game off strong with an 9-0 run, and the Mohigans never looked back. Morgantown went into halftime with a 20-10 lead. George Washington was able to make it a single digit game at the end of the 3rd quarter, but the Mohigans would press on, scoring 20 of their 26 points in the 4th quarter by way of foul shots. Morgantown was able to hang on for the win 56-45, despite having more turnovers and fewer rebounds than their opponent. The Mohigans were led by Senior Torin Hanson, who scored 24 points, 15 of which came from the foul line. Nicky Solomon also had a notable game, scoring 14 points and grabbing 6 rebounds in the winning effort.
George Washington couldn’t seem to find their touch from the field early. Their first field goal came by way of a 3 pointer with only 1:30 left in the first quarter. The partriots would continue to struggle from the field, only shooting a combined 13% from the field and scoring 10 points in the first half. Shooting would heat up a little in the 2nd half, but it wasn’t enough to pull the victory out in the end. The patriots finished the game shooting only 32% from the field, and 8% from beyond the arc. They were led by Tracy Conliffe and Justin Phillips, each scoring 10 points.
Morgantown walks away victorious in this one, 56-45. The Mohigans will move on to face Capital in the Class AAA Semi-Finals. George Washington finishes the season with record of 19-7.
