Quarter-Final Game 6 of the 2017 WVSSAC Boys Basketball State Tournament featured the #4 Notre Dame Irish and the #5 Gilmer County Titans. Notre Dame entered the game with a 20-5 record, picking up their Regional Championship win against Pendleton County. Gilmer County entered with a record of 21-4 with their Regional Championship win coming against Tucker County. These 2 teams met in their sectional championship game, which Notre Dame walked away victorious with a score of 61-54.
Notre Dame started off trading baskets with the Titans opening up a lead of 11 points halfway through the 2nd quarter. Gilmer county would answer back, however the Irish would go to the dressing room with the lead at halftime 26-23. Halftime adjustments proved to be big for the Irish, as they would increase their lead to 12 points at the end of the 3rd quarter. The push would continue into the 4th quarter, with the Irish extending the lead up to 18 points during the 4th quarter. Notre Dame walked away victorious 66-45. The Irish received an outstanding performance by Jared West and Jared Fagan, who finished 16 and 14 points respectively. West also grabbed 9 rebounds, just missing the double-double in the winning effort. The Irish finished the game shooting 50% from the field, forcing 15 turnovers, and outscored the titans 32-12 in the paint.
Gilmer County played an excellent game, especially in the first half. They went into halftime only trailing by 3 points. However, the talent of Notre Dame would prove to be too much in the second half as the Titans were outscored 40-22. The Titans received an excellent performance by Carter Springer and Trey Shuff, who finished with 15 and 10 points respectively.
Notre Dame moves on to the Semi-Finals to face Wheeling Central Catholic on March 17th at 1:00 PM. Gilmer County finishes their season their season with an impressive final record of 21-5.
