Quarter-Final Game 4 of the 2017 WVSSAC Boys Basketball State Tournament featured the #1 Wheeling Central Catholic Maroon Knights and the #8 Valley Fayette Greyhounds. Wheeling Central entered the game with a 23-2 record, picking up their Regional Championship win against the St. Marys High School. Valley Fayette entered with a record of 16-10 with their Regional Championship win coming against Greater Beckley Christian.
Wheeling Central started the game off strong and they never looked back, going on a 7-0 run to open the ballgame. The Maroon Knights broke the game open in the 2nd quarter, extending their lead to 33 points at the end of the quarter. The Maroon Knights lost a bit of their momentum in the 3rd quarter, but were able to hold on until the end of the ball game, winning by a margin of 15 (67-52). The Knights received an excellent contribution by their entire starting lineup; with Burkhalter, Gainer, Rohmann, Brent Price all scoring in double digits. The Knights finished the game shooting 52% from the field.
Valley Fayette started the game off rather slow, which extended through the end of the first half. The Greyhounds were only able to muster 11 points in the first 16 minutes of play. The 2nd half was a completely different story however. The Greyhounds outscored the Maroon Knights 26-8 in the 3rd quarter and cut the deficit to 12 at one point. In the end, the hole dug in the first half proved to be too much for the Greyhounds to overcome. The greyhounds received an excellent performance by Spencer Dean who finished with 21 points and Dondre Davis who had 13 of his own.
Wheeling Central moves on to the Semi-Finals to face the winner of (4) Notre Dame vs. (5) Gilmer County on March 17th at 1:00 PM. Valley Fayette finishes their season their season with a final record of 16-11.
